When you cut or change direction rapidly, your trunk needs to rotate, allowing your hips to drive and maintain balance. If your thoracic spine is stiff, your body will try to force that rotation from your lumbar spine (lower back), which is designed for stability, not rotation, putting it at risk. This exercise helps to dissociate upper and lower body rotation, a key aspect of efficient change of direction and reducing torsional forces on your spine during agility drills. It teaches your body to move as an integrated unit.

Variations & Progression: To make it more challenging, you can add an overhead reach with the arm opposite your lead leg during the twist, further extending the hip flexor and challenging balance. For deeper hip flexor engagement, focus on actively squeezing the glute of your trailing leg as you lunge. If balance is an issue, perform stationary lunges with the twist before progressing to walking. You can also hold light weights in your hands to increase the core engagement during the twist. Aim for 8-12 lunges per leg.

Description & Benefits: This is another personal favorite, a real multi-joint liberator. Start in a push-up position. Step one foot outside your hand, letting your hips sink towards the floor. Your back leg should be straight, heel lifted. From this deep lunge position, place the hand on the same side as your lead leg on the floor, and then rotate your torso, reaching your other arm towards the ceiling. Hold briefly, then return, step back to push-up, and repeat on the other side. This exercise comprehensively targets deep hip flexor mobility, adductor flexibility, and, once again, thoracic spine rotation, while also getting you into a low, athletic stance.
